This little-known mountainous relief, which is still not over-visited by classic tourist flows, is characterized by an essentially Miocene limestone nature and covers an area of almost three thousand hectares, with a maximum elevation of just over 400 meters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Historical and Defensive Aspects: The Greek ladders of the Climite Mountains.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1321 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mysiracusa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20231022_111647-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"271\">The Climiti Mountains stairs are four in number, arranged along the main flanks of the mountain massif; they are the access routes to the plateau and represent <strong>ancient evidence of the agricultural use of<\/strong> this Hyblaean area, with human settlements dating back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the presence of<strong> ancient Bronze Age necropolis<\/strong>. Access to the stairs is not always easy, for much of the year some of these stairs are almost inaccessible due to the dense vegetation that covers them almost entirely.<br \/>\nDuring the <strong>Byzantine period<\/strong>, human evidence on the Climite Mountains reached its peak, highlighting a special interest in the defensive and military aspects of the area, given its favorable geographical position to prevent possible enemy attacks. One of the cornerstones of this history is the <strong>Castelluccio<\/strong>, a Byzantine fortification located on a hilltop near the southern tip of the plateau.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural and Geological Aspects<\/strong><br \/>\nIn addition to its historical importance, the Climite Mountains boast extraordinary natural and geological richness. The area has a breathtaking landscape with lush valleys, evergreen forests of Quercus ilex and Quercus virgiliana, and<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mysiracusa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240213_145648-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"> a variety of rock formations and the presence of <strong>countless fossils<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Vegetation adapted to chemophilic conditions grows on the cliff faces, with species such as Putoria calabrica and Dianthus rupicola. The garrigues, populated by plants such as <strong>Sarcopoterium spinosum<\/strong>, Phlomis fruticosa and Salvia fruticosa, provide ideal habitats for a diverse herbaceous perennial grassland, with species such as Hyparrhenia hirta and <strong>Ampelodesmos mautitanicus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of quality and importance, this area is distinguished by the presence of rare or endemic species and the preservation of still intact and diverse forest formations. Many of these formations are unique and increasingly rare in the rest of the Hyblaean territory. The area is also home to a remarkable avifauna, with particular <strong>emphasis on birds of prey such as the Lanner<\/strong>, a rare species present with a pair, and the <strong>Sicilian Partridge<\/strong>. The invertebrate silvicultural fauna is equally diverse, with numerous <strong>Sicilian endemics<\/strong>, some of which are known only from a few localities in the Hyblaean region. The diverse fauna of the xeric and subxeric environments of the garrigue includes many rare and stenotopic species, contributing to the ecological richness and naturalistic value of the area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geological Aspects: Volcanites<\/strong><br \/>\nOn the summit of Mount Climiti stand several submarine <strong>volcanic diatrems<\/strong> of Miocene age, evidence of a tumultuous geological past. These volcanites are light gray in color and strongly acidic, offering a fascinating <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mysiracusa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20231022_123241-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"252\">geological curiosity to visitors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Place to discover<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Climiti Mountains are an ideal destination for adventure and nature lovers, offering a wide range of unique experiences to enjoy.
