It is possible to visit both craters. It is advisable to visit the Upper Silvestri first, where it takes about 30 minutes on foot to reach it and be able to walk to the rim of the inactive crater. Reaching an altitude of 2020 meters, one can enjoy a breathtaking landscape, where if visibility permits, much of the southeast coast of Sicily, the city of Catania and neighboring towns can be seen.<\/p>\n
The lower Silvestri is the easiest to climb and is also the best known. It takes about 5 minutes to reach the crater’s rim.
It’s located right next to a well-known bar and restaurant where you can stop for a break.<\/p>\n
It is also possible to combine the visit to the Silvestri craters with a beautiful hike through the nature trail called “Back of the Donkey”, you will get to walk on the brink of the Bove Valley, along the path of the total length of about 5km (round trip) you will come to some sections where you can observe some remains of the lava flows of recent years, amidst intense colors and scents coming from some of Etna’s endemic plants many of which form cushion-shaped bushes such as Saponaria (Saponaria sicula) Astragalus (Astragalus Siculus) Tanacetus (Tanacetoum siculum) the Chamomile (Anthemis aetnensis) the Fescue (Festuca circummediterranea) the Romice (rumex scutatus aetnensis) the Etna Violet (Viola aethnensis), and the Etna Brooms that glimpse along the paths with the different variations of yellow.<\/p>\n
